Not My Gift!

I guess it’s a good thing we live at the old people place where 2 meals a day are cooked for us. Bless my heart!

It all started two days ago when Wesley, our grandson who lives nearby, was supposed to come to supper. He had to cancel.

I can’t make excuses. The meat was overcooked that day. How can I overcook a roast in a crock pot? Rather easily, I guess.

Today I decided to try to salvage the roast. It was very tasty even if it was pretty dark. I blamed the looks of it on the gobs of aged balsamic I had doused it with.

I shredded the meat. Yep. pretty tasty. I added some frozen mixed veggies and frozen onions from the freezer, a can of French onion soup, some water and lots of rice. I had to put everything in a larger glass dish. I turned it on low in plenty of time for it to be ready when Wesley arrived.

Not quite done. Pretty soggy. The rice was still crunchy, but I thought there was enough juice to take care of the rice.

Not!

We played a hand of rummy with Wesley while we waited. I added biscuits to the oven.

The sweet potatoes turned out well. The biscuits ended up being burned on the bottom because I had plopped a hefty pat of butter atop each one. There’s a fancy name for burnt butter which is a real culinary thing, but I can’t remember what the name of it is. Though they were very brown and crunchy on the bottom, they tasted pretty good.

Anyway.

I brought out the casserole and wisely had Ronald taste it before I served it.

Ronald had a bite, looked up at me where I stood waiting for the verdict. ‘Olive Garden?’

We had a lovely meal there, came home, and sent Wesley home with an extra entree you can get there for six bucks. Since he loves sweet potatoes, we packed up those for him to take. Ronald put the biscuits in a bag into the fridge. He said with a little doctoring, my casserole would be salvageable, so he put it in a good old Tupperware container.

We’ll see. Most of it will probably end up in Monday’s garbage sack.

I was trying to find Bible verses to go along with today’s disaster. I’m not being sacrilegious. These verses are about spiritual things but just struck me funny as I applied them to my situation.

Philippians 4:13 NKJV ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’

Except cook.

Proverbs 28:13 NKJV  ‘He who cover his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.’

There was no covering up the failures of today. I had to confess and also do it here. Does the verse mean I can forsake cooking? That would be merciful for anyone who comes for a meal I prepared for sure!

Though I have teased about it here, I was sad I had messed up again. It wasn’t the first time, and unless I give up trying to cook, it won’t be my last.

Psalm 34:8 NKJV is overstating my remorse and failure, but it does give me a measure of comfort. ‘The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.’

Failure isn’t really my favorite thing, no matter how trivial. The great thing is, God sees and cares about all that concerns me.

Psalm 73:26 TLB  ‘My health fails; my spirits droop, yet God remains! He is the strength of my heart; He is mine forever!

Blessings

Kara Beth
