One Step Away

I am one step closer to having a new vanity. Or one step closer to another failure. I’ve already taken the final step toward being a cheapy by ordering another ‘put it together yourself’ piece of furniture.

I’ve done this sort of stuff lots of time. Granted, this may be a little more difficult but I figured – wrongly so – I am older and wiser so I can whip this project out in no time. The truth is I am no wiser and LOTS older. Not a good combination.

I took my time yesterday and did a pretty good job on most of the base. I only spilled glue on the plastic cutting board that is covering my sewing table. Easy peasy to clean up. Since it is hard on my back to bend and stand in the way I was working, I rested frequently, got an acceptable portion of the project finished, then called it a day.

I finally got around to working on it again this afternoon. I’m following the directions very carefully, double checking my work as I go, and gluing several of the pieces together before I attach them with the included hardware. I only put in the wrong screws once but was able to remove them easily.

Then things started going downhill. I shouldn’t have glued the wooden plugs in without setting them a little deeper. I was unable to make the next piece settle closely enough to its corresponding section. Then I spilled the open bottle of Elmer’s glue onto a nearby chair cushion.

The project screeched to a quick halt!

I washed off as much as I could, but still needed to throw the rascal into the wash. Ugh!

So.

Little progress was made today. I walked away from the project before I lost the remainder of the day’s patience. No ‘plumbing language’ was uttered. Yay, me! Though I did nick a place in my attempt to remove a glued in plug, it’s not something a little paint won’t hide. I’m refusing to dread the assembly of  several doors. The drawers should be no problem – I hope those aren’t my infamous last words!

All in all, it was a day of lessons learned – which is never a waste of time. I got a wee bit discouraged, but I’m not giving up. This weekend is free of activities, so I’ll keep on trying.

And really, that’s what we need to do in all areas of our lives. Whether it is dieting, which is long term, or something as simple as changing the washing, or loading the dishwasher, there are habits  we should try to develop to make life easier and better.

As I struggle through this life, I also want to make sure I am carefully taking every opportunity to build my Christian character with wisdom and determination.

The Living Bible explains 2 Timothy 16 and 17 this way. ‘The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and help us do what is right. It is God’s way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone.’

Sounds like a good plan that will end in blessing others = win/win.

Something worth thinking on.

Blessings

Kara Beth
