Strong Stuff!!!
I wanted to sit on my backside this afternoon but still get something constructive done. I pulled out two items from the mending pile, grabbed some thread and a needle from a drawer, and settled onto my recliner with my desk on my lap and my feet in the air. Yep, ready to work!
Except I had to find my glasses as I was working with black thread on black material. After putting on the glasses, I happened to look at the spool of thread. I do believe it must be nigh on to ancient!
When was the last time we could buy Heavy Duty Mercerized thread for 29 cents? I was sure the thread would be no good. Old thread pops with the slightest tug.
But I yanked and pulled repeatedly, and the thread withstood the pressure. I was amazed and relieved. I didn’t want to get out of my comfortable chair to get another spool. Yep! This thread would be great.
I quickly finished repairing a cute little bee toy. I had hot glued it to a hat for a costume a few weeks ago. When I tried to remove the bee, the only way I could retrieve it was to cut it away from the hat. Unable to melt off the glue adequately, I snipped a hole in the poor creature’s belly. I hope it will last until I have some great grandkids. The bee and hive are so cute!

The thread is strong enough to sew a button on Ronald’s britches. Good deal.
I got to thinking about strength of old things. I was cleaning a kitchen drawer yesterday and moved a metal kitchen hammer I use to crush ice and nuts. Ronald had received that tool over 55 years ago from an old lady who was giving up housekeeping and had no doubt used the items for years. That item and several others from the lady have not lost their usefulness or strength. Though they’ve been carelessly moved about, ignored until their owner wanted something from them, or used with no appreciation and little care, the tools still do their job.
Many of us ancients around here exercise like crazy or take handfuls of supplements to retain our strength. Some, like me, put on my eye makeup most everyday as if that will help in any way. I think the only thing the makeup does is make me feel dressed properly. Like putting on my necessary earrings to keep from being ‘plum neked.’
All that exercise and junk we take to help our bodies is okay. Probably pretty useless, but whatever.
What is important is keeping our spirits strong. And our relationships. And our spiritual perspectives correctly aligned with God’s word. And our love of God front and center.
The Bible is full of promises and admonitions for older people, but they apply to all ages.
Philippians 1:6 assures us that God began a good work in us and with Jesus’ help, we can keep on.
Hebrews 12:1 encourages us to run the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.
I’m not running or hurrying anywhere these days. More like plodding and poking along, but I am keeping on, trying to live as close to the Truth as possible. I want to be strong in my faith so that I may ‘proclaim Your might to another generation, Your power to all those to come.’ Psalm 71:18
Blessings
