Amusements of the Aging
The featured image above is Mr. Ed, one of the most artistic amongst us here at the old people place. Isn’t he the cutest thing? Between his sweet smile and adorable Swiss accent, he makes me laugh.
He was an engineer and taught others in America how to use the equipment his company made in Switzerland. He has been an amazing woodworker and clock repairman. The traits needed for those jobs are evident in the work he does around here.
I have many of his designs hot glued to my walls. He makes intricate designs on heavy card stock.

He often makes whimsical designs on river rocks in addition to the carefully crafted art.

So as I passed his lunch table, I should not have been puzzled at his messy plate of food.
The cooks had red, white, and blue dessert for Memorial Day and made what was left available for today’s treat. Mr. Ed made it today’s art project.
When I accused him of playing with his food like a child, he assured me he was making another work of art.

We all giggled as he explained his thought process. Yes, I could see his intent. And the truth of it, it hasn’t been that long since I bit a piece of bread into a shape reminiscent of Ratatouille, the Disney cook.
Here’s a challenge – swirl your next plate of gravy into a fun design. Or how about whip cream in hot chocolate? Or arrange the fruit on your plate into a smiley face?
Ya gotta get your giggles where you can! Especially at our age!!!
Here’s the serious part of this blog.
I believe that God gives the desire for artistic endeavors. He gives the talent to be creative. I am pretty sure He gets a kick out of us and our art work – no matter how funny!
Since God is the ultimate Creator and we are made in His image, it makes sense to me that we should be creators.
The Bible is full of examples of God giving special talents to be used for His glory. As long as what we are creating results in giving God the praise for the talent and the works are uplifting and worthy of His blessings, let us use our gifts accordingly. The following verses refer to being responsible stewards of our spiritual gifts, I think they also apply to the talents we use.
Ephesians 2:10 ESV ‘For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.’
Romans 12:6 ‘Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.’
1 Peter 4:10 ‘As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good steward of God’s varied grace.’
Think on it!
Blessings
