Just a Touch
Can I say I love young people? Of course, that category for me grows by the day. Seems like 90% of the world is younger than I am. Shoot! I’ll bet I’m in a smaller minority than that!
U-Turn
I was lucky enough to be introduced to computers back in the day of the Apple 2e. I’ve had Macs since then and enjoyed the learning. I use computers to write books and blogs with enough silliness to sink a ship. I’ve written musicals and corresponded with friends and family much to my delight. I’ve dabbled with Chief Architect to no avail. I work on my picture editing regularly and print out pics to adorn my walls with my favorite subjects – my grandkids!
Back on Track
I have to tell of some other kids I love – all the sweet techies around the world who respond to the frustrated cries of this old lady.
Like yesterday.
I guess my Microsoft Word had expired. Must have missed that memo. After talking to a virtual fake person, I got through to Yuri who was most patient. I had actually called the wrong company, but he guided me through what site I needed to go to in order to renew. So precious!
But somehow in the process, my credit card information kept telling me I had the wrong number. So being the frustrated old lady I am, I pulled out another card, typed in the number and decided to upgrade.
And guess what? With one touch of some random button, I ended up with TWO charges for the subscription.
But the Lord blessed me by connecting me with another real person, HARSH, who was far from that! So understanding and kind!
Within minutes, HARSH had come up with a solution I wouldn’t have expected. I ended up with a 2 year premium subscription at a huge bargain. So all was not in vain.
Two young people, two wonderfully patient experts who were helpful beyond my expectations. I am so blessed and pray they are as well.
I got to thinking about pushing buttons. Sometimes, we can ‘push someone’s button’ intentionally. As I go around the tables here at the old people place and bug everyone about participating in the talent show in March, I’m pushing some to go beyond their self-conception. Everyone can tell a joke or something!
The other thing I have thought about touch is how seldom people reach out to others. I miss being in the church I grew up in where there were weekly hugs from older ones who had watched me grow up. There were handshakes and hugs all around, babies were passed around for tickles and hugs, teens gathered with high fives and more hugs. At our new church, we haven’t yet made that kind of friendships.
Ronald and I, as former teachers, realize the importance of touch. Here, many old people live alone and need more touch than they sometimes realize. We try to give hugs, touch a shoulder, or simply pat a hand making connection deeper for our community.
But the most important touch we need is the Lord’s touch of blessing on our lives. Today’s promise for us comes from Isaiah 41:10 NIV where God speaks to His children. ‘So do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Think about the Creator of the universe holding us and guiding, the Savior, the Christ, always with us. Totally awesome! The best touch ever!
