Diddly-Squat!

Here are two examples of ‘diddly squat’ in my life.

#1 I cannot find ‘diddly-squat’!

#2 I can work all day and really get ‘diddly squat’ accomplished.

If you don’t believe it, look at the picture above. Yes, folks! I spent my entire afternoon and early evening sorting nails and screws I will never use.

I wanted to rehang a picture that fell off the wall the other day. I wanted to hammer one of those picture hanger metal toothy things on the back of the picture to hang it properly. I needed a measuring tape to figure out the center of the large frame. Took me a long time and a few boxes before I found it. I wanted to use a hammer to get the tiny nails into the metal sides. I couldn’t find the hammer at all.

I tried to put in screws using a regular screwdriver, but I couldn’t get the job done.

I found the electric drill, then had to find a bit small enough for the tiny screws. Finally got that done. Yay, me!

Next on the agenda was hot glueing some shells to my living room walls. After three days of searching, I still can’t find the hot glue gun. Sadly, before we moved, I decided to downsize and keep only one of the three guns I had. Now I know good and well it’s in a box in the garage … somewhere. But where is the question.

As I was looking, I had three boxes of tools and various supplies strewn around the garage. Since I haven’t been able to quickly put my hands on various nails and assorted screws necessary to continue to make my nest, I decided to rearrange said items in the boxes where they have been jumbled for the past who knows how many years. I dumped the boxes’ contents and other things from the bottoms of the three large containers onto the table. I put on some gospel music and commenced to sorting everything and replacing everything into plastic boxes that are cleverly divided and hold such items quite nicely.

Mercy! What a waste of time and effort! When and where in the world am I ever going to use that many nails with heads, nails without heads, screws with flat heads or screw with round heads? I was so crazy, I sorted those items according to the extra criteria of straight screwdriver driven or Phillips head screwdriver driven!

So many other things were foolishly sorted and put in little baggies. All my screwdrivers went into a big plastic bag. Wrenches in another. Drill bits in another. Funny little tools saved from various ‘put together yourself’ furniture in yet another.

Like I said. Diddly Squat was really accomplished. Maybe a wasted day I guess. Oh, well. Such is the life of an old lady!

There is some consolation – I’ve wasted my time on stupider stuff – like writing silly stuff like this.

Anyway. Here’s some positive wisdom…

Psalm 90:12 The Psalmist asked God to ‘teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.’

Ephesians and Colossians speak of walking in wisdom by redeeming and making careful use of our time.

Maybe today’s work will be justified the next time I need a bolt, or a metal washer, or a water filter inside a rubber ring. Maybe … Someday.

Blessings

Kara Beth
