Therein Lies a Tale

I always say everybody has a story. Oftentimes, things do too!

If this street sign could talk, I would love to hear about the person who made up this street name. Was it an old coot like me who needs to write her interminably long lists to remember what I want to accomplish? What GDOT person accepted this name? Or is there even a process to do that?

Wouldn’t it be funny to have a road named ‘Thing-a-ma-jig Road?’ Or how about ‘Where In the World Am I Corner?’ Or ‘You Know What I Mean Street?

Silly, right.

Names of new inventions sometimes change over time. Frank Epperson happened upon a frozen treat which he found tasty. He named it Epsicle but his kids kept asking for the ice sticks made by their dad – hence the Popsicle! Cream Rinse became Conditioner. Thongs became Flip Flops, and G-strings became Thongs. Peddle Pushers are now called Capris. Dittos became Mimeographs became Xeroxes became I guess just Copies. People used to Tape shows, now they Record or DVR – whatever that means!

Anyway. We have moved to an old people place just off Jot-‘Em Down road, and I found out the meaning. The name is based on the tradition back in the day when a local store owner would tell his customers to just jot down what they were getting and pay when they could. Days of honesty and honor, right?

That isn’t as funny to me as the road where we dropped off the rental truck – Moonshiner’s Way. I listen to bluegrass music with Ronald, and we hear songs all the time about moonshiners running from the revenuers. I can just imagine that happening! Of course, I have to tune out the outrageous traffic noise to let my imagination run wild. Certainly busier than Thomaston!

Speaking of names…being the crazy old woman I am, I have named some of the regular visitors in our back viewing area. Rebel is the red-winged blackbird that rests in the closest tree. Alfred is the turtle that pokes his head up as he navigates the lake. Denice and Denephew are the alligators that stir the water just below the surface. Ronald says it is just my imagination. It probably is. They’d have to wear long handled underwear 24/7/365! I’m going to get used to the 10 degrees average colder temperatures. Not complaining, just telling the truth of it. I ordered two more long sweaters with hoods today!

U-Turn

It’s really neat to think about God’s naming abilities. Psalm 147:4-5  NKJV says God counts the number of stars and calls them all by name. I recently heard that some of the modern technology estimates there are billions of galaxies. Can you imagine keeping track of their names? Shoot! I can’t remember the name of the little old lady 5 doors down or the guy across the street! Verse 5 tells the truth of it. ‘Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.’

Isaiah 43:1 says, ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are mine.’ Can you imagine God speaking your name?

1 John 3:1 MSG. ‘What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it-we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are!’ Amazing to think about.

Like an old children’s song says, ‘God knows my name, and He cares about me. I know, I know! It’s a miracle!

Think on it!

Blessings
