Look of Love

Anyone who knows me knows I’d rather take a beatin’ than get out in the cold. Also, I am not a sports fan. Never have been, never will be. Which probably stems from my traumatic childhood where I failed at everything from Red Rover to doing jumping jacks. Always the last to be picked for any team. Shoot! I can’t even hit my dirty clothes basket from six feet away with my dirty socks, so I don’t blame anyone for their choices! Needless to say, physical education was always very humiliating for me.

But these days finds me at sporting events at every opportunity, screaming my fool head off, and zooming in to film my grandkids in whatever sport they are playing. No matter the weather, I want to be a rabid cheerleader for my young’uns! Doesn’t matter if it’s 95 degrees and I’m sweatin’ bullets or 90 below and I’m freezing my backside!

The recent track meet however was a true test of a Grammie’s love.

Now folks, this is Georgia. It is spring. The daffodils are in full bloom and adorn every ditch and empty field. Someone didn’t get the memo that it is supposed to be warm, or better yet, HOT! Believe it or not, the wind chill was 32 degrees!!! And yes, my northern friends, I am complaining.

As the afternoon was cloudy and already a wee bit chilly, I wisely decided before we left to keep on my sweatsuit. I don’t have any long johns, so I slipped a pair of my looser jeans over the sweatpants. A crocheted scarf and my warmest winter coat completed my ensemble. Oh yeah, and my mittens which were super warm. We brought along one afghan and 2 other blankets. Good thing!

You know how fat globs up in the refrigerator? I guarantee this old lady was one big glob of freezing lard! Mercy!

We watched our grandson vault. With a grandfather’s love, Ronald gave Grady his jacket to wear between vaults. What we needed to do was make the kids a fire pit to warm themselves! Man, it was cold!

Our granddaughter who was to race an hour later, graciously sent us home. Her other races were canceled because of rain. I am surprised it didn’t snow! ARGH!

But love is what keeps us old ones going.

Proverbs 17:6 says grandchildren are the crown of the aged. My Uncle Ed used to say if he’d known grandkids were this much fun, he would have had them first. Of course, that’s the same guy who said there were two types of kids…no good and good for nothin’! I can still hear his uproarious laughter after his often told joke.

The Bible has so much to say to parents about the importance of teaching their children and setting good examples for them.

So I have to nag at this point! PLEASE tell your kids and grandkids to get off their stinkin’ phones and converse and interact with each other! You may think I’m a crazy old lady (which I am) but People! This  is TRUTH! Blink twice and your kids are grown and gone! You don’t have but a few seconds to be with them. Take time to REALLY be with them and connect.

Blessings

Kara Beth
