Lamentably Undisciplined

I ran across the most wonderful line in my latest reading. Mrs. Pollifax was speaking with her husband about what they would see on their upcoming vacation. Then her mind began to wander … a state of being I understand too well. As all her thoughts twisted and turned into possible scenarios for her next spying foray, she was playfully scolded by her more serious husband.

“And there it was, she thought ruefully, her imagination was so lamentably undisciplined.”

Oh, my goodness, is that a perfect description of my own sweet self or what?

I ask a total stranger to tell me about herself. In no time at all, I can picture her poisoning her latest husband or desperately running through thick kudzu vines to escape the bad guy.

I examine a group of men across the restaurant talking quietly and imagine them to be Russian agents who have infiltrated the local television production team in order to spread leftist propaganda. Of course, one can just watch the main stream media and see that happenin’. No imagination needed there. (You can find a corresponding blog I wrote several years ago under Russian Mafia and Rock Musicians.)

Anyway.

I think my being ‘lamentably undisciplined’ shows itself in other ways. Like I have four different craft projects going at the same time, seven novels started and in various stages of completion, and three crossword puzzle books beside me just to mention a few things.

Ronald and I play lots of cards. We have developed our own game – Hudd Rummy. I don’t know if it’s spelled with a y or an ie, but you get my drift.

Ronald always arranges his matching sets in nice, neat fans. Mine are displayed in harum-scarum order. Harum scarum is actually a phrase from around 1675. Interesting trivia. Totally useless. But feel free to use this information to confound and impress others at your next dinner party.

Anyway.

You can see my ‘undisciplined’ attitude in the way I lay out my sets of cards. Ronald sometimes thinks I do it to keep him from seeing and then laying down cards on his side that go along with my sets and make points for him. I don’t think I do that, but hey! When it comes to winning strategies, I need all the help I can get!

I really get tired of hearing him sing, ‘We Are the Champions’ after every game. Not really. It always makes me giggle.

As I took The Real You.org personality test the other day, it showed one of my giftings to be creativity. I had to agree. And I have to say I am a kindred spirit with poor Mrs. Pollifax. And like her, I just can’t help having a lamentably undisciplined imagination. I’m sorry. It’s fun.

As I studied Bible verses to justify my attitudes, I decided there is no way I could have come up with being this way without the Master Potter having a hand in the process. I know the Word says He gives the breath, the spirit, the skills, and formed my very existence. He guides my life to fulfill His glorious purpose. I pray my undisciplined imagination is part of His perfect will for me.

Well, yeah, I’m not all that He made me to be or wants me to be, but maybe some of who I am reflects His intentions.

At least, I hope so.

Blessings

Kara Beth
