Skill vs Delusions

By golly! If my sons-in-law can watch videos to learn to make amazing projects, I can watch a few You Tubes and fix my sewing machine! Right?

Wrong.

Sometimes, I think I have more skill than I do.

Wrong.

I ALWAYS think I have more skill than I do. Sigh. Like I said – Delusions.

It really gets old after a while. When do I just give up on things and call it a day?

Probably never. Though it would be a good idea and a whole lot less mess.

In my attempt to reupholster a chair, my back room looks like the FBI raided my house! If they had, I would have offered the whole thing to them just to not have to feel guilty about not finishing another project or clean up the room.

But back to the machine. It hasn’t worked correctly since I paid big bucks to get it cleaned and repaired. The closest Pfaff dealer is Atlanta, so I will not be returning for a do-over.

Problem is, I can’t finish the chair until I get my machine working properly.

I watched one old guy who got to the part where I hoped he would show how to take the machine apart. He stopped right before. Another video I couldn’t understand very well, so I cut the sound and viewed the pictures over and over. That’s how I got things this far along. Thankfully, I was able to put it back together with no extra pieces.

But my problem was as I initially thought – a faulty foot control. Or at least that’s what I hope it is. I just ordered a new one, but I probably made another mistake by ordering a cheap knock-off brand.

If all else fails, I’ll just buy myself a new machine and get back to work.

In my war against my inadequate mechanical skill level, I lost the battle today.

But!!! Here are some good things about my project.

Though I didn’t succeed, I tried my best. That’s always a plus.

Though I didn’t get to use any of my cool power tools, it was kinda fun to tinker. (Though I did think a time or two about getting out my blow torch and doing it in!)

Though I couldn’t repair what is broken, I’ll have another shot at a successful sewing episode if the pedal I ordered works.

Through all the mess and inabilities, I have a couple of friends who have said they would help me finish my chair – which is the main reason I need the sewing machine.

And guess what? I didn’t once use my ‘plumbing language’! I was having so much fun, I didn’t even think the words! Yay, me!

I’m not going to warp the sacred Scripture today with my usual twisted takes. Well, maybe just one verse – 2 Corinthians 8:11. Though Paul was talking about other, more spiritual stuff, it does seem to apply to my situation. ‘So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have.’

Jesus had some words I guess I should have considered before I ripped apart the chair in the first place. ”For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?’

So the moral of the story …

Relax and call it a day.

Blessings

Kara Beth
