Imitation, Real, or Tricky Substitutions
A number of years ago, we toured a sugar processing facility in Sugar Land, Texas. No joke – there was a mound of raw sugar at least three stories high in an enormous warehouse. After we saw how they grew, harvested, refined, and graded (can’t remember the right word) the types of sugar, we were shown to the packing area. We were all amazed as the guide presented rows and rows of different brands of packaging bags being filled from the same stream of sugar crystals. He explained the difference between the top brand and the generic. In this case, there was none except the outer covering and the price of each.
After that, I have tried comparing food items. Sometimes, there seems to be no difference between the high priced stuff and the cheaper house brands. At times, an item is not different enough from its counterpart to warrant paying for the top brand. Sometimes, the brand name is worth the extra.
I found out recently that was true of toiletries. The razor I bought which was several dollars cheaper did not work anywhere near as smoothly as the higher priced, name brand.

So what does that have to do with Christmas? Plenty.
Just so people won’t think I am a total Scrooge, I do have a Santa among my decorations. The ornament featured is my contribution to modern seasonal tradition. Though he is a strange Santa, that’s what he is. Like my superhero who wears suspenders, my Santa is a sweet, round gardener in overalls. For real! Isn’t he cute?
I do not mean to be offensive – I’m just stating my opinion. Take it or leave it.
The Santa Claus tradition in America began when Dutch settlers introduced the celebration of the feast day of St. Nicholas, aka Sinterklass. A Visit from St. Nicholas, a poem published in 1823, turned the attention from the manger to a money making madness that has drastically changed society’s perception of the true meaning of Christmas.
As we go about giving gifts trying to emulate Santa, may we instead try to think about the shepherds who brought their worship to the Christ Child. Since we cannot begin to equal the outrageous value of the wise men’s gifts, let’s keep in mind proper and wise stewardship of the funds available to us.
Most importantly, we should remember and teach our children the true meaning of Christmas. God came in human form to provide redemption and restore fellowship with Him. The best gifts ever!

Think about it.
