Dessert First!

There is a sign in one of our favorite restaurants. ‘Life is short. Eat dessert first.’ Seems like great wisdom to me. Since I made sugar free pecan bars for Thanksgiving, I felt justified in following that sage advice.

Plus today, it seemed like the right thing to do. Hospitality is one of my specialties – which means at Grammie’s house – ‘Whatever you want to do, sweet baby, it’s all right with me!’

My oldest daughter, Stephanie, and her family went on an early morning hike at Pine Mountain – more than 4 miles! And it is cold as a well digger’s destination! And several of them hadn’t eaten breakfast beforehand! Crazy kids!

They must have walked faster than expected, finished their hike early, and came on to the house. Of course, I loved that! More time with them means more giggles. And nothing is more satisfyingly filling than lots of laughs and fun!

My meal was mostly ready. Mac and cheese was fresh from the oven, and peas, beets, and buns were all warmed nicely. The ribs were not ready, so I left them in the stove to finish cooking.

Bunny trail. I gave up cooking turkey long ago. In my younger days, I tried it. The first time, I was proud of my efforts until I pulled it out of the oven and wondered what the funny smell was. Who knew there was a plastic bag with the poor turkey’s neck stuffed in the front. I think I made a pot of chili and called it even. The next year I thought I was much wiser, cooked that rascal, but lo and behold! Who knew they also stuffed innards in the other end? Needless to say, it was a foul fowl that year as well. Non-traditional meals have always been my forte anyway. Why go normal when quirky always works better for me?

Anyway … Cokers stopped on the way here and picked up ice cream to go with the apple pie they brought. You know, the good kind – with sugar.

When they arrived, they were all starved. We said a prayer, filled glasses, and handed out plates. And yes, it was dessert first. I’m not sure mac and cheese and apple pie were really very tasty together, but that’s what they had. Crazy kids! To their credit, they ate some of the peas and beets as well, but I didn’t really care. As long as no one went away hungry!

The ribs and leftovers were eaten later. We had a nice time, and the strangely sequenced meal made the day memorable. The only bad part of the day was every picture that was taken of me showed I had forgotten the most important thing! I forgot to tuck in my double chin! Worse than an old turkey gobbler’s!

Anyway. I pray you all had a great day.
