Old Sayings Take 2
If you are puzzled by the Take 2, look at the last blog.
Old sayings mean different things to different generations. Some of my father-in-law’s sayings were hysterical, and some were head scratchers. For instance, ‘fine as frog’s hair’ was his standard response when anyone asked how he was. ‘Tight as Dick’s hatband’ is strange but was actually a common phrase back in the day. We looked up the meaning, but surprise, surprise! I can’t remember what it said, and I’m too lazy to look it up today. Through the years, we tried to document Dad’s old sayings. I would list them all, but only the Good Lord knows where I put the listing!
I love neat twists on words. Bluegrass songs have some very clever lines, more so than many of the secular and religious songs today which are often too repetitive and unimaginative. (Sorry for the old lady rant.)
Even the Bible uses language creatively. I’m always reading Ronald some neat phrase I read. I wonder sometimes what those say in the original languages, though I think the translators have been very true to the authentic wording and the intent.
We heard Poet Voices at a concert in Georgia a few months ago. We have been particularly drawn to a song by Phil Cross (a member of the group) and Carolyn Cross English. I think it’s one of the most ingenious uses of common phrases I have heard. You can tell from the picture of the CD cover, it is getting some serious playtime. I’m only showing the chorus, but the whole album is worth a listen.
WHEN I GET CARRIED AWAY
I’m gonna let the glory roll when the roll is called in Glory
I’m gonna get beside myself when I get beside the King that day
I’m gonna have the time of my life when the time of my life is over
I’m gonna get carried away when I get carried away.
Since I have always said I want to take a flyin’ leap into eternity, I ’bout get the vict’ry every time I hear that song. Ronald is always a little bit concerned when I get carried away singing it. When I get well from this surgery, I have promised to take him on a special trip. Due to my frequent retelling about wanting to take the flying leap, he has decided that the Grand Canyon is no longer on his bucket list.
I’ll close with one of my Daddy’s favorite old sayings. He always said, “Make sure your heart is right with the Good Lord!” True, succinct wisdom!
As I looked for a perfect Bible verse to share, there were a number of sites listing common phrases used in the modern day which were originally penned by the inspired writers of God’s Word. It’s amazing how frequently people unwittingly speak God’s Truth!
Over and over, the Word reminds us to remember God’s commands, His loving interventions in our lives, and His blessings and expectations. I encourage you to find your favorite lines of Scripture and memorize them.
Before I get carried away into a full-blown sermon, I’ll sign off.
Blessings
Kara Beth
