Worthy Causes

There are some who need a handout. I understand that. Ronald and I have always looked for ways to help others. Sometimes our giving was the right thing to do. Sometimes we’ve helped a person who keeps tripping over his/her own stupidity, anger, poor life choices, or whatever. That’s discouraging, but we keep on trying to help as God wants us to do.

Looking for a worthy cause can be an eye opening experience. I try to do the due diligence. Is the charity spending more on salaries or advertising than helping those they claim to be reaching? Too many times in the recent past, we have seen gross misuse of funds. Blatant dishonesty runs rampant among charity groups. Try to be very careful that donations are not squandered, given to dishonest leaders and employees, or spent on less than reputable activities.

But there are times a struggling person would love the chance to pick up herself by the proverbial bootstraps. One of our friends suggested we donate my Swedish Death Purge items to the Christian Women’s Center in Griffin, Georgia. I am so glad Scott brought this to our attention. After meeting a waitress in Alpharetta who is turning her life around with help from a similar program, we see the the possibilities of rescuing one woman at a time.

The Christian Women’s Center is a demanding training program which offers help in dealing with addictions and relationship disconnects. The job and life skill training lead these women to confidently and capably provide for themselves. Spiritual counsel and the introduction to a religious community provide a support to gain the most important piece of their new life puzzle – a relationship with God who loves and cares for them now and through eternity. It can’t get better than that!

Jesus reached out to the woman at the well. I think she felt His love and acceptance despite her really rough and tainted background. I’m pretty sure her life was totally changed by the encounter with God’s holy Son. I think we need to give our love and affirmation to these desperate women and support them in their attempts to change their lives.

This thrift store is well run, clean, and has a friendly staff who go the extra mile. You can donate and shop at the store at 1655 North Expressway and make a real difference in the lives of others. I think their donation hours are now on Tuesday and Thursday at this location.

In The Message Version of the Bible, Proverbs 3:27 says, “Never walk away from someone who deserves help; your hand is God’s hand for that person.”

And who deserves help? As our recent revival speakers at Northridge Church told their stories, I was reminded once again how God doesn’t choose perfect people, He chooses those He knows will be obedient to His calling. In 2 Peter 3:9, the apostle reminds us that God would love for all to come to repentance. We can help provide that exact opportunity through our donations to this program. And of course, the best help is sincere, intercessory prayers for the center’s clients and the staff!

Blessings
