Reflections of Reflections

I’m not much of a mirror kinda gal. I had one at the end of the hall. I would check myself out from afar, shrug, and say good enough. From a distance, the blatant flaws and wrinkles seem to disappear. I recently removed that mirror to put up pictures of my family.

The funny thing about mirrors – they don’t always give a true perception. A tall mirror in my sewing room makes me look like the tall man in the circus. The mirror from the hallway sits in another room at an angle until I decide where to hang it. In the meantime, my reflection makes me look like the fat lady at the circus. They say those with body dysmorphic disorder see distorted reflections that feed into their warped perspective. Interesting, right?

As I look down the hallway, I don’t see my reflection any more.

Or do I?

When the girls were young, one of our lines as they left the house was, “Remember you are a Huddleston girl.” We prayed that they would carry through with behaviors that would reflect our teachings and family values when they were away from our influence and oversight.

One of my favorite verses from my past is “Consider the rock from which you are mined.” As I have been blessed with strong, godly examples in my ancestry, I think much of who I am today is because of the generational heritage and influence. Though I didn’t know many of them, the stories of their bravery to thrive during times of oppression have affected my own mindset. Ronald and I reflect the teaching and foibles of our parents.

My girls picked up personality traits from Ronald and me. They have built on or discarded various skills, activities, attitudes, and life goals we offered or modeled. As they matured, they follow their unique, God given paths because they have resolved to make serving God the most important thing in their lives. I pray they and their descendants will continue in The Way.

The most important reflections are for us to accurately reflect God’s love to a dying world and realize how much God loves us.

John 13:35   Your strong love for each other will prove to the world that you are Jesus’ disciples. KB

Jeremiah 31:3 says God  has loved us with an everlasting love. And John 3:16 says it all.

Doesn’t get any better than that!

Blessings
