Humble Pie Parties
The old man and I love to give parties. We look for any excuse to celebrate. Though we don’t usually have luncheon parties during the week, we had a good reason today.
Ronald’s pool table needed some players. We invited the pastoral staff for lunch and pool.
Bless my heart. I was going to be fancy and went to town for things to make a charcuterie tray. All was good.
Ronald bought an apple pie yesterday. I bought sugar free cookies so Ronald could indulge along with the others. I tried to convince the bakery lady to talk me out of buying a cheesecake sampler. She was no help at all!
I got home with everything in fine order and prepared my purchases as planned.
Then…
That darn multitasking did me in again! I overfilled the tea maker which resulted in tea streaming all over the counter and onto the floor. I didn’t realize until later it also dripped into the drawer below. With a few ‘Oh, rats!’ and miscellaneous complaints and criticisms about my abilities, I cleaned up the mess.
Everything was going well after that until I decided to melt butter for the buns that would go in the oven at the last minute. I put a stick of butter in the microwave and carefully covered it. I was doing that while telling Ronald what the clerk at Ingles and I had discussed. Somewhere in the process, I didn’t pay attention to what time I set.
Minutes later, the timer went off. When I opened the door, lo and behold, I had scorched the butter to a crisp! Though the butter had been mostly contained in the paper towel covering, it was just one more mess to clean before company arrived. Mercy! One more reason to resign myself to the ditzy woman line.
The guys are having apple pie. I’m having humble pie. There is no pride in my cooking skills. My food may not be good for anything but a laugh, but I keep trying! I did learn a new word – beurre noisette, which is a purposeful browning of butter. Who knew?
Winston Churchill said history would be kind to him because he intended to write the history – which he did! (His history books are worth the read!) They say Moses was the most humble man who ever lived. Of course, he did write the books in which his life was chronicled. My blog’s recordings show – well. I am smarter than my writing indicates – sometimes.
Blessings

This is the Living Bible version of 1 Peter 5:6.
And all of you serve each other with humble spirits, for God gives special blessings to those who are humble, but sets Himself against all who are proud. If you will humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, in His good time He will lift you up.
But I love verse 7. Let Him have all your worries and cares, for He is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you.
