Elegant or Quirky
Life is filled with earth shaking decisions.
My oldest daughter and her family gave me a lovely print of a Disney cruise ship for my birthday. Since we have taken many cruises with them, the picture is particularly meaningful to me. I got it framed appropriately, and it is lovely.
It has also challenged me. After hanging it in three different places, I think I have finally found the correct wall for it. I still need to pound another hole in the wall to hang it a little bit more to the right. I’ll fill the other twenty-nine holes I have pounded nails into and taken the nails out of, spackle, and paint the wall again when I finally put it exactly in its final resting place.
The reason there are so many holes is part of my conundrum. Do I hang it alone, or do I have it in a setting with other pictures or objects? I hung it with several other Disney themed souvenir pictures (my fairy godmother print – my alter ego, and Merlin -aka Ronald) and my DaVinci style logo which states God’s love is our special magic. He was my kinda man, you know. Unconventional. Past that, nope. But I can pretend.
I had the print on my wall with all my dirty pour art that my grandkids made. It just didn’t work. I put it on a stand on my entertainment center. Didn’t work there either.
So, after finally deciding it would be the only picture on the center wall, it still needed two other objects to make an eye-pleasing grouping of three. On my Hobby Lobby run, I found a frame on which I could paint my favorite saying about the ocean. It’s still a work in progress. For piece number three, I couldn’t decide whether elegant or quirky, whether to go with the calm and serene lovely colors of the sea, or have a fun pop of color that could result in a quirky look to downright tacky.
Guess which I chose? Remember, I do have a pool table in the middle of my living room.
Life is full of choices. Some make little difference. Many choices change the trajectory of our lives and the lives of those around us. The ripple effect of our decisions can end up moving us along to a fulfilled life, or we can drown ourselves in our own poor choices and take down all those who are following our example.
There is one choice that is paramount and will lead to a fulfilled life, but also to a glorious eternity. Joshua told the people of Israel in Joshua 24, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” The people answered, “The Lord our God we will serve, and His voice will we obey.”
May it be so in all our lives.
