Earring Back Object Lesson
My hands are like my mama’s. She swears hers are substantial due to picking cotton until she was an adult. I have no excuse. Since I keep my fingernails cut down to the nubbin, I have no long nails to help pick up teeny weeny things like earring backs. Between stubby fingers and short nails, I’m in trouble!
Vacation over Thanksgiving yielded two pairs of earrings that fed my earring fetish. The one in the picture was purchased at a glass making shop along an artist’s trail in Tennessee. I have a justifiable fear of losing earrings, so I must wear earring backs to prevent losing my valued treasures!
Modern earring backs are made out of plastic that accommodate the curve of the loops that go in the ear lobes. Being that clear and that tiny challenge the fat fingered elderly. If I can actually see the little rascal on the countertop where I laid it and haven’t accidently dropped it on the floor, the next step is to pick it up and place it carefully on the earring wire.
Therein lies the problem. If one does not have the bloomin’ thing turned exactly the right direction, surprise, surprise! The earring back will not go on no matter how you shove it, twist it, or turn it!
The other morning, I was already running a little late and of course, earrings are an absolute must for my wellbeing. I had to get the earrings on before I went out the door. I struggled valiantly for what seemed like an eternity to get the earring back turned the right way. I looked at it in the regular light of my bedroom and still couldn’t see the hole.
I finally went to the window, threw open the curtain, and stood in the light of the sun. The miniscule hole was now obvious. I turned it the right way and easily slipped the back onto the wire.
Aha, thought I! An object lesson in the making!
When things of my life are not turning out right, when things in my life don’t fit together, I must turn to the Light – the Son! Jesus said He is the Light of the world. He lights my way as I step out in faith.
Easy Peasy!
