Bioluminescence Object Lesson

So you know, I am the Queen of the Object Lesson! You wouldn’t believe what I see in ordinary things that turn my thoughts to God and what He wants to teach me. My son-in-law’s Christmas gift to us provides God moments each evening.

Several years ago, we were blessed to cruise with Cokers and spend a few days in Puerto Rico. Our family event’s planner, Stephanie, arranged for an exciting kayak trip to a bioluminescent bay. As we swished our hands in the water, tiny organisms caused the water to glow. It was a memory of a lifetime.

To commemorate this great experience, Mark got us a globe holding some of this magical water. Each day, I set the globe in bright sun. Each night right before bed, I shake the globe and watch the water glow a beautiful blue. Some days, I can just touch the ball and the light shines!

Herein lies my nightly object lesson and life challenge.

Light in the Bible is a symbol of things like holiness, wisdom, and God’s revelation. In John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.” I love the latter part of the verse from the Living Bible – “So if you follow Me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, for Living Light will flood your path.”

As I shake the globe each night, my soul reminder and prayer is from Romans 12. ‘The night is far gone, the day of the Lord’s return will soon be here. Lord, help me put on the armor of Your Light.’ (KB paraphrase!)

The other curious thing about the water also reminds me of my need to stay close to Jesus and His Word. If it has been a cloudy day, the water hardly glows – if at all! Interesting, huh?

Blessings
