Legacies, Traditions, and Loss

This time of year, many people are obsessed with tradition. On my list, I would have to include putting up Christmas decorations much earlier than other people. We open presents whenever the mood strikes. Secrets? Never!

Our most controversial non-tradition got us in trouble more than once with friends and relatives. From the time our girls were little, they knew Santa was a fun, fictional character. Jesus is the reason for Christmas. He alone is real and knows which side of the nice/naughty scale we are riding. I’m not denigrating anyone who chose to tell kids Santa was real, but I was not raised that way. I chose to raise mine with the same belief.

The picture above is a plant Mom and I have kept alive for 34 years. It was a gift plant from my dad’s funeral. Each fall, we would save a sprig and replant it. Since Mom went to a home, I have had total custody. Though I try to keep it contained in small pots, it outgrows its boundaries each year. We usually keep it in the garage, but this year I wanted it inside. It is not only thriving, it is growing by leaps and bounds. The plant reminds me of Daddy and represents the strong, thriving Sheek Family Legacy. We have taught our family as we were taught – to love God and to love America!

Many of America’s legacies have not been handed down. The resulting disregard for our Constitution and Bill of Rights breaks my heart. The laws of the land are meaningless to those who disrespect the sacrifices made to insure our freedoms. We are being herded into governmental systems that will destroy America.

The saddest failure of any generation is to neglect teaching our children to know and love God. I challenge you and pray you will commit yourself to instilling Biblical Truth into the lives of your family. Take time to teach the history and civics of this great land. Maybe we can turn the tide.

If not, Maranatha!

Blessings

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. Deuteronomy 6:4,5
