Perfect Strangers

I had the sweetest thing happen today.

Social Distancing be Hanged!

I had just walked into a Kroger store’s produce section. A tall, young, black man who worked there came right up to me and gave me a big ol’ hug. “How are you doing today?” he asked. I hugged him back. “Doin’ just fine,” says I.

I assumed at first he had mistaken me for someone he knew, so I pulled down my mask for him to see my face.

He didn’t seem at all surprised that he didn’t know me. “What are we having for lunch?” he asked.

“Oh, honey. I’ve already had lunch. I had a waffle. I’m shopping for supper.”

“Already? Well, what are we having?”

“Sliders, tater tots, key lime pie, and cole slaw. You have to have your greens, you know.”

“You’ll save some for me, won’t you?”

“You come on down to Thomaston, and I’ll feed you any time!”

The funny thing is, I would. If he were brave enough to eat my cooking that is, but that’s a whole nother story!

It was so sweet to interact with such a nice, young man. His kind response to me, an old, white lady disproved the false narrative that the media and hate mongers shove at us every day. Over and over I see that people just want to love each other no matter what color we are. We want to get close and to interact in civility, friendliness, and genuine caring!

I wanted so badly to commend the young man to his boss, but I was afraid that he might have gotten in trouble for not keeping social distancing. Instead, I decided to ask my heavenly Father to bless the young man for being a blessing to me.

Blessings to you all!
