Enable, or Protect and Empower

I can’t find anything funny about this scenario, so I’ll just give a “GRAMMIE WORD OF WISDOM”.

Today at the pool, a teacher was trying to coax a little girl into the pool. The little one was throwing a fit. Daddy was kneeling and sweet talking her, rubbing her back, and enabling her. Mom was standing nearby watching.

Unable to keep my nosiness in check, I spoke to the parents as I stepped into the pool. “I know I’m a buttinsky, but whether it’s Sunday School or swim lessons, it’s usually best if the parents just leave. She’ll be fine in five minutes.”

The mom agreed. “Last week I left, and she was fine.” She walked into the next room, and the little girl continued to scream. The dad continued to enable. The mom walked back into the pool area, said something to the husband, and they left. The little girl let out two more little yelps and then followed the instructor’s lead. She enthusiastically responded to the rest of the lesson.

I am sure I made my share of mistakes through the years. Despite all my over-protection, my girls have become empowered young women who think for themselves.

I encourage parents to think seriously about what you are modeling for your children. Are you showing confidence in their abilities? Are you encouraging them to step out and conquer or cling in fear?

There are times, especially in this wicked world, we need to focus on safety, but use every situation to help kids grow in self-esteem and decision making. And of course, help them grow in the strength and the knowledge of the Lord.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.

Blessings
