Kick a Little!

There was a country song by Little Texas entitled, Kick a Little. Today some of my kids learned to do just that. I pray they never have to use the skills they learned, but they now have a basic foundation stone of self-defense thanks to an amazing teacher, Troy Logan, of Strike First Self-Defense in Decatur, Georgia.

Mr. Logan introduced Tep and Missy’s families to a few skills that could save their lives. I’m sorry – I gotta preach a little here. It is Sunday after all. Much of what he said can also be a spiritual warfare lesson.

Just as I’ve ranted to my piano students and my kids as they were growing up, a foundation must be laid on which to build a skill. Whether it is proper fingering in music or sounding out words to read well, practicing the basics over and over teaches the brain  a certain pattern. Deep within you, the muscle memory then enables you to perform properly and automatically. Know the scripture so thoroughly that when the need arises (which is always!) you will automatically perform the skills that are deeply implanted in you to fight the good fight of faith.

One of Mr. Logan’s concepts is to avoid danger. I could preach and nag on that a while, but Proverbs says it best.

Proverbs 14:14-15 Don’t do as the wicked do. Avoid their haunts—turn away, go somewhere else TLB

Proverbs 16:17 The path of the godly leads away from evil; he who follows that path is safe. TLB

Other takeaways included trusting your gut instincts and be aware of your surroundings. I’m pretty sure this applies also to the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our lives and living lives with ears, hearts, and minds open to Him. The gifts of discernment given by God allow the believer who is wise to see right from wrong. Don’t ignore the still, small voice of God that wants to direct you to eternal life.

Unlike self-defense, in the spiritual realm we don’t fight as a last resort. From the beginning of a battle, bravely pray the prayer of faith and use the powerful sword of the Spirit – the Truth of God’s Word – to overcome the enemy of your soul!

Short and sweet. That’s today’s sermon.

Blessings

Mr. Logan gives private classes and small group instruction at his facility or will go to your location. He also teaches large corporate and school groups. I highly recommend his teaching and techniques.
