Nerds and Broken Windows

A recent experience made me examine the importance of what others think of us. And I have to say, I decided it doesn’t matter a hill of beans! I will rejoice in the person God made me to be!

And yes! If you are in the immediate Huddleston family, you are a nerd to the core. We give Ted talks, discuss theology, ethics, and politics – even with our young grandkids. Or let me say especially with our grandkids. We talk about books we’ve read and challenge the kids to explain what they learned or accepted as worthwhile from their reading.

Parenting Alert!

Never pass up a good opportunity to talk with your kids. Did you notice I said with? They need to be able to express their emotions and explain how they view the world’s current events and things that are happening in their own lives.

Never pass up a chance to explain a scientific concept or idea. Explain mathematical or financial issues that you experience and let them put in their two cents.

Never pass up a chance to show them how God has moved in your life. Ask them often about God moments in their day. You will be surprised at their answers.

And if you are Ronald Huddleston, you never pass up a moment to teach the English language.

We were at a restaurant with Amanda, Andy, and the boys. After hearing a young lady misuse ‘me’ in a sentence, Ronald discussed with the boys the easy way to remember whether to say ‘I’ or ‘me’ or ‘him’ or ‘he’. The verb has to be passive. The subject and the noun following the passive verb have to be the same thing. “He is the author.” “The author is he.”

After testing Silas with several sentences, Ronald turned to the younger brother. “In the this sentence, what would you say to “Who broke the window?’ ” Instead of the expected answer – “It was I,” Gideon replied with a straight face. “Silas did it!”

Needless to say the English lesson was over, but NEVER pass over the chance for a good laugh!

Blessings

Pet peeve alert! At restaurants, instead of looking at your dang phone, talk with your kids!

Deuteronomy 6:5-9 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words that I give you today. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you’re at home or away, when you lie down or get up.
