Saggy Pants and Unwarranted Fears

This is not a commentary on people who try to walk around with their britches below their butt cheeks. If they want to make that fashion statement, it’s not my bu’ness.

But I do have a funny story about that particular style.

Our nephew was hiring new staff at a grocery store where they supplied uniforms. The young man he interviewed had passed all the tests and was ready for the next step toward employment. Eric asked what size pants he wore. The young man, well over six feet tall, spouted a ridiculous inseam length. When questioned about it, the future employee said the short inseam was okay since he always wore the pants well below his waist. Eric replied that the company required all personnel to wear the uniform around their waists with belts. The future employee said, “I don’t wear my pants up that high for nobody!” Needless to say, nobody hired him.

That being said, I have to wonder how they have the dexterity to walk and do anything dressed like that. I know I can’t! Herein lies the tale.

Last night while getting ready for bed, I leaned somehow wrong with my already weak back. Bingo! I was down for the count.

This morning, Ronald helped me put on socks and pants and then left to go take care of Mom. That had been an activity I had planned for myself today. My to-do list became my to-don’t list.

I tried doing a few chores. I moved gingerly and used my handy dandy grabber tool to pick up and straighten a few things around the house. I realized the pants were way too tight around the waist and were adding pressure to my back pain. I tugged the elastic band lower, and the compression was relieved.

As the grabber and I continued to walk slowly around the house, I felt the britches slide further and further down. I feared they would soon be taking a quick trip to my ankles.

Now folks, that was an unnecessary worry! I was alone in the house, no one could see me, my tunic is almost knee length so nothing would show anyway, and who cares?

PREACHIN’ ALERT!

Needless worry is a habit we all give into at one time or another.  Instead of worry, we need to make the decision and move on! What you are going to have for supper, what you will wear to the church Christmas party, or what gift to give your mother-in-law don’t really matter in the long run. Think on it a minute as you weigh the pros and cons of each choice, settle the issue, then think on something worth thinking on! Worry is a waste of brain cells.

Philippians 4:8 talks about thinking on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy. Not once does it mention worry as an acceptable activity.

Jesus said over and over, “Don’t be afraid!” In Luke 12, He says repeatedly, “Don’t worry!” God cares for us more than we can ever understand. Jesus gave us the remedy for worry – by loving God, loving others, and by consistently putting His Kingdom work and purpose first in our lives, we can live worry free, knowing God provides.

There! That’s your sermon for the day!

Blessings,

KB
