“That’s My Story and I’m Stickin’ To It!”
First I will give a Preachin’ Alert.
If you aren’t up to a little thought provoking lesson or you are a heathen, just keep moseying along to another blog. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Who first said, “That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it?” Probably Eve said it when God found she was no longer naked as a jaybird like the good Lord made her. I wonder what kind of leaves she and Adam used to cover themselves. I hope it wasn’t poison ivy! Now that would be some kind of funny! (Nerd Alert – If you want a humorous read about Adam and Eve and creation, check out Mark Twain’s Diaries of Adam and Eve.)
I was blessed to have extremely honest daughters, or I was horribly naïve. Maybe the later, but I think lying wasn’t much part their personality traits. In addition to my sense of discernment, Ronald was a dean and had training in lie detection. One glare from Dad and the girls would spill the beans!
Can you imagine being Jacob’s parents? When a kid’s name means ‘Deceiver’, you know you are in for a long siege of problems. I’m bettin’ that his daddy asked him many times, “Is that a fact?” to which the wily Jacob would reply, “That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it!”
Old Noah had a long haul of keeping to his story. For over a hundred years, he was mocked for building an ark. He preached his message of repentance and was probably asked by enemies, friends and family alike, “What do you think you are doin’?” He stuck to his message and saved his family. I’m sure there’s a lesson there for today’s parents. You think on it and let me know.
I love old Peter. Now there was a man after my own heart – good intentions, rash judgments, and a sassy mouth! Bless his heart. Jesus must have had many a face palm as He tried not to laugh at Peter’s antics … or throttle him. Isn’t it funny what we often judge Peter by were traits that were in actuality his strengths?
(Grammie Rant – Instead of saying our kid is hard headed, call him determined. Instead of calling him impulsive, see his ability to assess a situation and act quickly. Or sometimes, whoop his bottom and sit him in the thinking chair. It all depends on the situation! Sometimes it is the parents who need the thinking chair. And always the prayer bench!)
Anyway. Peter stuck to his story until the rooster crowed three times. It was then he had the perfect response – he repented. For the rest of his life, he stuck to the story of his friend and Savior, Jesus.
Jesus stuck to His story. Through parables, miracles, and outright admissions of His deity, He proclaimed His story of salvation. As He was beaten and abused, hung on a cross and died, He kept His Truth. At His Resurrection, He boldly declared His victory over death, hell, and the grave. At His Ascension, He showed the world His earthly story was finished and challenged His followers to continue to share His message of love throughout the ages and throughout the world.
Now that’s a story worth stickin’ to!
Blessings
Kara Beth
