Wear Some Earrings or Be Neked!

Everyone has her idea of being appropriately dressed. We saw a woman going into a rest stop. She was dressed nicely in matching slacks and blouse that seems to be the preferred style by women of that age. At the time, I was tempted to tell my husband about the old lady who was so lovely, but I realized I was probably closer to her age than I wanted to admit.

Anyway – her idea of being properly dressed seemed to include the finishing touch of lipstick. But to me she was naked – or neked as a jay bird as we say in these parts. Just the other day I told Mama, “Here we are, half way to the store, and I realized I am plum neked!” Sure I had clothes on and my makeup, even my rings and bracelet. Somehow in the shuffle, I forgot earrings! That is just NOT RIGHT!

I love me some gaudy earrings! Amanda, my middle daughter, has recently given me some cool earrings that I think are made with 3-D printing. (Learning to do that is on my bucket list.) She also got me gold and silver tassel earrings that I call my Carol Channing look. Missy got me some popular yarn-bottomed earrings that are fun to wear which always remind me of the colorful embroidery of Central and South America – which reminds me to pray for the ministry group, Tapestry of Love, headed by my sister-in-law, Kathie Huddleston. (I’m saving her story for another day.) My grandsons and my brother’s wives have both blessed me with lovely earrings they made.

Stephanie’s husband, Mark, is quite a shopper, and I get some pretty jewelry there as well. One year, he bought me frog earrings that always remind me to Forever Rely On God. Grady, his youngest, helped Mark pick out nautilus shaped earrings while we were on cruise. I love the memories of that time together when I see or wear those. When I wear the turtle earrings Ronald gave me, I remind myself to walk slowly. They were purchased when I was trying to get used to walking the same pace as my mother. As I wear the elegant earrings my granddaughter, Lyric, chose for me, I remember to be careful so I don’t lose them. Then I think of the children’s song, Oh, be careful little ears what you hear. As I wear my butterfly earrings, I am reminded that I am a new creation in Christ!

So my earring fetish is really quite Biblical you see.

Hmmm. That makes me think of what is really important to wear. You guessed it! The Armor of God!

If we were all as careful to put on the belt of Truth, the breastplate of Righteousness, shoes of Peace, the shield of Faith, the helmet of Salvation, and wield the sword of the Spirit as we are putting on our regular clothes, we may end up even more attractive.

1 Peter 3: 3-4 says not to be concerned with the outward beauty that comes from fancy hairdos, clothing, or jewelry, but our lasting charm and beauty comes from a gentle and quiet spirit.

1 Samuel 16: 7 explains that God doesn’t look on person’s outer appearance. He looks at a person’s heart and sees her deepest thoughts and motives. There He sees if she truly has a heart for God and His righteousness.

But I still hope He doesn’t mind my gaudy earrings.

Blessings
