SHORT ORDER COOKS

I have determined that short order cooks are geniuses!

Have you ever seen Ratatouille? It’s a cute, animated movie that offers the assumption that anyone can cook. Though I find it inspirational, it is simply not true for me.

Like the rest of his family, Ronald likes to cook. He has become the chief chef at the Huddleston household since his retirement. Thank goodness!

This time of the year however, the first thing he does every morning is go to see how much his garden has grown overnight. You may think that is silly, but a person can sometimes see great growth in twenty-four hours of ideal Georgia weather. Which means I have to wait for him to fix breakfast or fix it myself.

Just so you know, I do a majority of the cleanup, so I am not totally worthless in the kitchen.

This morning, I decided while he was out checking the garden, I would make sausage and egg burritos. The first thing I always do is turn on the exhaust fan. Wisely so.

As we are dieting a bit, I put a very small amount of good ol’ Jimmy Dean into a pan and turned on the stove. Obviously not low enough because in no time, the sausage was sizzling and smoking. But only on one side, so I flipped the sausage and continued.

My life is full of shoulda, woulda, couldas. This morning I shoulda cut up the onions before starting anything. I scurried to slice the onions to chop in my fancy mandolin (vegetable prep tool).

In no time at all the sausage was a bit overdone. If I had thought things through, I woulda had the jars of minced garlic and picante sauce at the ready. I coulda pre-cracked the eggs and had them quickly available for adding to the mixture. By the time I added butter to another pan to cook the tortillas, my garlic, and onion had burned – though I prefer the term crystallized.

I stirred the meat mixture and served it with the tortillas that happily, I hadn’t overcooked. I did forget the taco seasoning, but after the first burrito, I added a little to the bowl. No biggie. Better late than never.

It was tasty after that. Not as good as Sonic, but it all worked out okay.

Next time he leaves me in the lurch, I plan on serving cold cereal. Other than spilling something, there is no way I can screw up. I hope.

My verse for the day is Proverbs 21:5 – “Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity.” I think good planning would help my cooking as well. I’ll remember that next time. I hope.

The company where I bought the mandolin I mentioned is listed on the resource page of my website. It is handy-dandy! I’ve given about 7 as gifts in the past year.
