Kentucky is a Lovely State

Kentucky is a lovely state. A little too cold for my taste, but my daughter, Amanda, and her family like it. That’s okay. At least it didn’t snow this time during our visit. We’ve gone up there a number of times after spring has sprung in Georgia. Erroneously assuming the weather will be the same 500 miles north of Thomaston, Georgia, is always an idiotic notion.

During Derby week, Louisville gets a little crazy, but nowhere close to the level of mania caused by their dedication to basketball. I learned that lesson the hard way.

When we travel, Cracker Barrel is one of our most frequent stops because the little ones of all our kids will eat well there. I always have to check out the Cracker Barrel store section offerings. I love a good bargain and can always find something I can’t live without. This says something about my fashion sense – I often find a blouse, jacket, home décor, or earrings that is just my style and just my color! Fancy, ain’t I?

Now I am a rather friendly sort and make small talk rather than ignore a person standing two feet from me at the sale rack. This particular day, I am so thankful I was in a funk and not in a talkative mood. I was also aggravated that most of the sale items sported UK logos. I had not seen that particular brand of products. The lady standing next to me and her husband seemed thrilled to find so many bargains and snatched up the UK garments with wild abandon. I found absolutely nothing worthwhile and went back to the table.

“I can’t believe there was nothing but UK branded garments!” said I. “Everything from baby onesies to mens’ xxl jackets, even jewelry with the initials, UK! There must be a whole bunch of people here from the United Kingdom!”

Ronald stared at me in disbelief then busted out laughing. After explaining the facts of Kentucky life to me, I flushed in embarrassment. But I also said a grateful prayer of thanksgiving for not blurting out my ignorance in front of those strangers. This is one time I inadvertently followed the scripture.

“There is a time to speak and a time to be silent.”

Blessings
